St. John Church

It was built by the bishop of Luni Antonio Fieschi,as you can read on the memorial tablet.Inside the church is divided in two side aisles and a nave,there is a wooden crocifix "Maraglaino School".It is interesting the mechanic organ Agati dated 1851.In the day of corpus domini there is a precession until the sea,where there is an altar on a boat for an evocative mass.

From Riomaggiore it is possible to go to Torre Guardiola center of environment and nature.For further information contact Comune 0187-920112.It is possible to go to The Santuary of Montenero by a little monorail train on the hill

It is possible to see castle's Ruins (XV-XVI century.)

 Riomaggiore's Castello 

Riomaggiore has a little castle on a hill,tìhat divided the two little valleys of Rio Maggire and Rio Finale with a panoramic view. It is possible to get the castle leaving from the station or the square of the church.The first defensive works werer begun in 1260 by  the marquis Turcotti,owner of this part of ligurian coast.He wanted to protect the village that was borning.So Rioamggiore was originated from some inhabitants,living near here.A document dated 1251 speaks about an assembly of local population coming from slpoes of Bramapane,Verrugoli,Parodi.They swore fidelity on Genoa against Pisa.The marquis Turcotti sold his proprety to Niccolò Fieschi and in 1276 these belonged to Genua.The castle has square base with the walls oriented to the sea. In the castle wall there are two circles towers;the entrance is between these ones.Today the castle has suffered the wear of time,weather so inside it was filled up with ground.

Riomaggiore is along the little valley Rio Major,it is the most eastern village of Cinque Terre.It is possible to get it by car from La Spezia.It has uncertain origin some historicists say the Riomaggiore was founded in VII th century,but also it is possible that the village was founded by inhabitants living around or half coast.The most ancient houses are similar to houses tower of middle age,they are close and in parallel line:The railway has modified the village,dividing it in fisherman's suburb and peasant suburb shopping

 Via dell'Amore 

It is a path falling vertically on the sea,that joins the villages of Cinque Terre.It is a suggestive walking for the tourist.the name love's path was given by a famous journalist Paolo Monelli,when he saw written on a door of a little house Love's Path. His article on newspaper "Corriere della Sera" makes it famous in the world. 

Santuary dof Virgin Mary Montenero

The first news about the sanctuary dated 1335,but it is possible to have more ancient origin perhaps XII-XII century The church today is the result of a complete reorganization dated in 1847.There is a  legend in which the picture of the church (XVI century) was hidden because the barbarians wanted it.So there is a feast in the second sunday after whit sinday

Volastra

The name of the village remembers olives of the country.It is possible to have a roman origin.It has an isolated position with a climbing road for cars.There is an ancient church,the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute.The building is romanic,probably of tenth Cantury.The local feast is celebrated in fifth august (inside the church has a tryphtic with S. John Baptizerm,St. Lawrence,St. Dominic)

Groppo

It is  the seat of Cooperativa Cinque Terre where the local apreciated products are sold like white wines doc, oil and so on.

 

The character

 

In Riomaggiore many painters have worked,but the most famous is Telemaco Signorini.He lived here from 1860 to 1895.Near his house there is a  memorial tablet.He worked in Rioamggiore durind summer and his paintings are very famous
